Happy Birthday Cavallini

Cavallini, Clifton Hill

Happy fourth birthday Cavallini – have some cake!

When Cavallini first opened four years ago it used to be my local. I’d wake up at about 11am on a Saturday or a Sunday after a 12 hour shift in a nightclub and about three hours sleep, grab my housemate Seamus (who was often by this stage up to ‘second breakfast’) and drag him to Cavallini where between us we would consume:

Latte x 6
Ham and cheese croissant smothered in bechamel sauce (it’s amazing) x 2
Rum ball and canoli x 3
Glasses of water: x 10
Cigarettes x oh, hundreds - back in the old days, you could still smoke in public (as I did then).

I do suspect that Seamus – who still lives around the corner – still gets away with smoking in that Cavallini courtyard but I think it’s against the rules and he’s just ignoring them. What a bad example! Shocking behaviour for a teacher…now Seamus who says he never reads my blog – let’s see if you manage to see this post!

I don’t head there much anymore, it’s a bit of a trek from Hawthorn to Clifton Hill if there’s no beer invloved, but every now and then, just for a bit of nostalgia Seamus and I will head over there for a little artery clogging.

Mmm, more cake.

It’s not the cheapest, and sometimes the coffee can be a letdown and the staff turnover is high – but they’re only the kind of problems you’d encounter if you went there every weekend. And then, you’d be treated like a regular anyway, with the new staff being taught how you like you coffee, and when you’d like that second rum ball (yes they are the best in Melbourne, and not I don’t eat them anymore because I’ll get fat). So tit-for-tat they have their failings like every cafe but Cavallini – I have a lot of love for you. Here’s to many more happy years. Hip, hip hooray!

Cavallini has a special place in many hearts, mine also included.

Seats are rare, prams and children are many, coffee waits are more than 2 cigarettes worth.

But all that aside, I still cannot find any other place like it.

And for that reason, after 4 years of searching, it’s still my favorite local cafe.

PS- If this post does get you down there, and its a warm day, the gelato is a must!!

    Almond croissant for me.

Cavallini is so very awesome. Especially living round the corner from it.
